Apple lays foundation for first-ever debt sale as part of stock buyback program

By: Trace Hagan | More News: Business, Financial & Legal | Posted: Apr 29, 2013 9:32 pm

Apple has laid the foundation for its first-ever debt sale. The company that has over $140 billion in cash and not a single penny of debt has decided to sell bonds in order to raise capital for its $60 billion share buyback program. It needs to raise capital because only about $45 billion of its cash is in the United States.

apple_lays_foundation_for_first_ever_debt_sale_as_part_of_stock_buyback_program

Interestingly, Apple was not rated a Triple A rating, even with all of the cash it has on hand. It is expected that Apple could cheaply raise funds, possibly cheaper than Microsoft, due to the current interest rate and notoriety of Apple. Investors are expected to jump at the chance to buy up some of Apple's debt.

S&P rated Apple as AA+ for debt and Moody's rated it Aa1. Moody's analyst Gerald Granovsky:

Apple's Aa1 rating is not higher due to Moody's view that there are inherent long-run risks for any company with high exposure to shifting consumer preferences.

Bankers expect Apple to issue 10-year bonds at roughly 45bp-50bp over Treasuries. Microsoft, on the other hand, recently sold 10-year bonds at 70 basis points over Treasuries.

Twitter accounts continue to be hacked, this time Guardian has some accounts compromised

By: Trace Hagan | More News: Hacking & Security | Posted: Apr 29, 2013 9:02 pm

Twitter continues to be in the news and not for good things. Twitter accounts continue to be compromised left and right, though not because of a bug in Twitter's system. Often times these accounts are compromised because the owner used a weak password, fell victim of a phishing scam, or simply told someone else.

twitter_accounts_continue_to_be_hacked_this_time_guardian_has_some_accounts_compromised

But that doesn't mean Twitter is off the hook. The micro-blogging site needs to hurry up and release its two-factor authentication in order to help prevent against these visible hackings. The latest accounts to be compromised are ones of the Guardian, a daily publication in the UK:

"We are aware that a number of Guardian Twitter accounts have been compromised and we are working actively to resolve this," a Guardian spokesperson said.

The Syrian Electronic Army has claimed responsibility for these hacks, much like they claimed responsibility for the recent hackings of NPR, CBS, and Associated Press handles. It's not clear how exactly the Guardian handles were compromised, though it's likely they used a similar e-mail phishing tactic.

Microsoft demos technology designed to help game immersion

By: Trace Hagan | More News: Gaming | Posted: Apr 29, 2013 8:33 pm

As we near the Xbox 720 unveiling on May 21, Microsoft has come out to display some new reality-bending technology that aims to help with game immersion. The technology uses projectors to display aspects of the current game onto the walls surrounding your TV. The technology is known as IllumiRoom and will likely be present on the Xbox 720.

The technology, seen in the above video, is pretty awesome. I can see where people will end up building rooms specifically designed to make excellent use of IllumiRoom technology. Take a look at the video and let us know what you think of this technology. I, for one, am extremely excited to see this implemented in future games.

Blizzard announces Diablo III is now available for pre-order for the PS3

By: Trace Hagan | More News: Gaming | Posted: Apr 29, 2013 8:03 pm

Blizzard, the company behind World of Warcraft and Starcraft, has announced that Diablo III is now available for pre-order for the PlayStation 3 console. I'm sure most of our readers will remember that Diablo III originally launched last May for the PC and suffered some major launch issues.

Blizzard has not specified a specific release date, instead saying that "further release details, including region-specific availability, will be announced at a later date." Gamers who put down the $59.99 required to pre-order the game will be rewarded with an exclusive in-game item: the Infernal Helm.

Mike Morhaime, CEO and cofounder of Blizzard Entertainment:

We've poured blood, sweat, and hellfire into creating an epic Diablo III experience for PlayStation gamers. In addition to including all the improvements from the PC version over the past year, we've made several updates to Diablo III for play on the PS3. We got a ton of positive feedback from players who tried the game at PAX East, and we can't wait to get it into everyone's hands later this year.

Check out Lightpack, an awesome new project on Kickstarter

By: Trace Hagan | More News: Displays & Projectors | Posted: Apr 29, 2013 7:31 pm

One of the TweakTown staff was browsing the latest Kickstarter projects and came across Lightpack, an awesome open-source project that projects colored light onto the wall behind your monitor or TV. The color is matched to what is currently being displayed on your screen, so it visually expands your screen size and aids with eye-strain commonly associated with viewing screens in the dark.

check_out_lightpack_an_awesome_new_project_on_kickstarter

Since the device is open-source, many cool features can be added by the developers at large. Plugins can be developed that make the lights change color to notify of an incoming Skype call, unread e-mail, or even that a spell has been recharged in World of Warcraft. Overall, the system is really quite awesome.

For the makers out there, Lightpack has released the designs for the PCB, bill of materials, and other needed files and designs so you can build your own at home. For the less electrically-inclined, Lightpack is offering up pre-built units if you support the Kickstarter campaign. It's almost completely funded, needing just under $10,000 more by May 31.

Corsair explains market position, is not being bought out by Francisco Partners

By: TweakTown Staff | More News: Business, Financial & Legal | Posted: Apr 29, 2013 7:12 pm

Corsair has just communicated information to us that states that Corsair is not being bought out by Francisco Partners (as previously reported), a private equity (PE) company based in the San Francisco Bay Area, which specializes in tech companies.

corsair_explains_market_position_is_not_being_bought_out_by_francisco_partners

Corsair, however, has confirmed that it is in active talks with Francisco Partners for an injection of funds to the tune of $75 million to settle in a few weeks. Corsair explains that it won't change the management of the company or its direction that targets the gaming and enthusiast market, one which Corsair says is "growing and shows no signs of stopping".

It's little secret now that Corsair had plans to go public last year, but it was around the time that Facebook launched and saw less than stellar results. This caused Corsair to re-think its plans and come up with something new. The result, it seems, is working with Francisco Partners.

OS X 10.9 to include tabbed browsing in Finder and iOS style multitasking

By: Charles Gantt | More News: Operating Systems | Posted: Apr 29, 2013 6:30 pm

Apple will announce OS X 10.9 this June at WWDC and this morning we are learning of a few new features that the OS will see. The updated operating system is said to include two very sought after features. Tabbed browsing in Finder as well as tagging. The update will also bring forth iOS style multitasking and a new version of Safari.

os_x_10_9_to_include_tabbed_browsing_in_finder_and_ios_style_multitasking

The new version of File Explorer will allow users to switch between multiple folders via tabs which removes the hassle of multiple Finder windows. Users will also be able to tag documents and files from within Finder, making searching for items much easier.

The update, which is codenamed "Cabernet", will also see a Safari refresh that is said to improve speed and efficiency, but I suspect Google Chrome will still be the better choice in browsers. Finally the update is said to bring forth a very iOS-esque style of multitasking where background apps will be paused when not in the active window.

Samsung reimagines Gangnam Style into some form of Bollywood awkwardness, WTF?

By: Charles Gantt | More News: Mobile Devices, Tablets & Phones | Posted: Apr 29, 2013 5:33 pm

It's Monday and after reducing your productivity already with Notch's new game, I would like to further prevent you from getting any work done by introducing you to this train wreck new Gangnam Style video produced Samsung to promote its Galaxy S4 in India.

If your jaw is now filthy from hitting the floor, I apologize, but this gem was just too good tragic not to share. Call me crazy, but I do not see "Samsung Style" hitting one billion views anytime soon, but stranger things have happened. I am sure we all remember the Klingon Style parody, and my personal favorite, NASA Johnson Style.

samsung_reimagines_gangnam_style_into_some_form_of_bollywood_awkwardness

With this new Samsung Style video, we are left wondering who at Samsung thinks the recent live performance musical themed launches is a good idea. If I had to choose the best smartphone / product launch so far this year, I would have to choose the BlackBerry 10 launch. It was informative, and the product demonstrations were short and to the point. You have to admit though, these odd ball launch events are pure journalistic gold.

IDC publishes report saying 6TB out of every 10TB allocated to backups

By: Tyler Bernath | More News: Storage | Posted: Apr 29, 2013 5:01 pm

It's no secret that we love to back-up our important data. We make copies of our data at home and at work and even have systems that automate the back-up process for us through devices such as NAS' and such. So many copies that we really don't get the full scope of it until a report like the one published today by IDC comes out.

idc_publishes_report_saying_6tb_out_of_every_10tb_allocated_to_backups

Laura DuBois, Natalya Yezhkova and Ashish Nadkarni all analysts at IDC corp, published a report today called The Copy Data Problem, which cites that for every 10TB of storage, 6TB is used for backups.

Based on the approach presented in this document, IDC estimates that in 2012, more than 60% of enterprise disk storage systems capacity may have been made of copy data. Similarly, in 2012, copy data made up nearly 85% of hardware purchases and 65% of storage infrastructure software revenue. In other words, 6TB out of every 10TB of disk storage systems capacity procured and deployed is allocated to copies of primary data.

By: Charles Gantt | More News: Storage | Posted: Apr 29, 2013 4:31 pm

This morning NAND flash memory manufacturer BIWIN has announced that it will begin selling commercial and industrial grade solid state drives in the US, Russia and Japan.

biwin_to_begin_commerical_and_industrial_ssd_sales_in_the_us_japan_and_russia

BIWIN produces such devices as 1.8" and 2.5" SSD with SATA interface, as well as lineups of mSATA SSD, mSATA Mini SSD, Half Slim SSD, and a variety of dedicated flash memory solutions made to order.

"In the highly competitive world of flash memory production, quality and flexibility are two areas that BIWIN has shown a compelling track record within the industrial and commercial flash market. But the key feature of their product is not just the great specs on offer but the wide variety of customization that customers can take advantage of. This is something that traditional manufacturers are reluctant to offer.

By providing a wide range of choices of commercial and industrial grade SSDs or by designing the kind the customers need, BIWIN is not only providing products and services, but they are also offering greater possibilities."

Authorities detain suspect in largest DDOS attack in the history of the Internet

By: Charles Gantt | More News: Hacking & Security | Posted: Apr 29, 2013 3:32 pm

Over the weekend Spanish authorities arrested a Dutch man who they say is responsible for the largest DDOS attack in the history of the internet. The man was said to be in his Barcelona home at the time of the arrest, and police seized several mobile phones and computers belonging to the suspect.

The man who has only been identified as "S.K." in official reports has been unofficially identified as 35-year-old Sven Olaf Kamphuis, by sources reporting to the NY Times. Kamphuis, or "The Prince of Spam", is a self-proclaimed minister of telecommunications and foreign affairs for the Republic of CyberBunker.

He is the spokesperson for a group that had previously protested tactics used by a European anti-spam group. He operates an ISP known as CB3ROB as well as web hosting company named CyberBunker. He faces charges after being linked to a DDOS attack last month that was like no other ever witnessed.

It targeted the anti-spam group Spamhaus, which maintains one of the largest spam block lists in the world.

Kim Dotcom offers $500 to anyone who films US envoy while playing the Megaupload song

By: Charles Gantt | More News: Current Affairs | Posted: Apr 29, 2013 2:59 pm

This morning everyone's favorite file sharing superstar, Kim Dotcom, announced via Twitter that he would pay $500 to anyone who managed to video US Attorney General Eric Holder or Vice President Joe Biden during their visit to New Zeeland next week.

kim_dotcom_offers_500_to_anyone_who_films_us_envoy_while_playing_the_megaupload_song

There is one catch, though. The video must contain real time playback of the Megaupload song, and cannot be added into the video after it was taken. Dotcom believes that Holder is responsible for Megaupload being seized as well as the guy behind the Great Recession financial crisis that led to a downswing in the world economy.

While that last part may be a bit of a stretch, Holder is directly responsible for the seizure of Megaupload (as head of the Department of Justice), the US government agency that ordered the website to be taken down.

Google Now lands on iPhone and iPad, finally

By: Charles Gantt | More News: Apps | Posted: Apr 29, 2013 2:33 pm

Google just launched its Google Now app via an update to the Google Search for iOS app. The app appears to be exactly the same as the Android version with the exception of users being able to swipe up to launch the Now application.

Google Now pulls information from all of your Google services like Search, Gmail, Calendar, Maps, Chrome browser history, and anything else that is connected to your Google account, then it provides pertinent information to the smartphone owner before they know they need it. Basically it is a concierge without an annoying voice.

google_now_lands_on_iphone_and_ipad

Baris Gultekin, Director of Product Management at Google, had the following to say:

"The history of Search can put Google Now in the best context. It's gone from serving links to being able to serve up links, and images, and videos, and deliver a rich experience. And then we wanted to answer natural questions, both in text and in spoken word. So to us, Google Now is the next step. It is answering the question before you ever ask it."

Drop, a new game by Minecraft creator Notch, will make your productivity drop like a rock

By: Charles Gantt | More News: Gaming | Posted: Apr 29, 2013 2:02 pm

This morning I stumbled across a new game that combines a trendy electronic beat with touch typing. The game was created by Minecraft developer Notch, and while I am unsure when it was released, it has killed the past 30 minutes of my life.

drop_a_new_game_by_minecraft_creator_notch_will_make_your_productivity_drop_like_a_rock

As you can see, I was able to hit 156 after many attempts that ended in the low 30s. In my defense, I am typing with a partial fingertip on my right hand, and I may or may not have had the sun in my eyes. In any event, give it a try and post your best score below in the comments.

RumorTT: iPhone 5S pre-orders to begin on June 20th and could ship as soon as July

By: Charles Gantt | More News: Mobile Devices, Tablets & Phones | Posted: Apr 29, 2013 1:32 pm

This morning a seemingly legit sales sheet from a Japanese telecom company states that Apple's next-generation iPhone will begin selling via pre-orders on June 20th. The document is the sort of "cheat sheet" that phone retailers hand out to their sales staff to help them memorize the key features of the phones they are pushing.

rumortt_iphone_5s_pre_orders_to_begin_on_june_20th_and_could_ship_as_soon_as_july

A few notable details seen on the cheat sheet is that the iPhone 5S will feature iOS 7, and will include a 13MP rear camera. This news does appear to be contradictory to what Apple CEO Tim Cook stated previously during an investment conference call where he said that investors could expect "new and exciting" products this fall.

At the same time Cook did explicitly state "new" products and not "existing hardware refreshes", which is what the iPhone 5S is. So, while things do not look great for a July launch date as stated in the leaked document, it could be entirely possible that we in fact see iPhone 5S' in the hands of consumers by August 1st.

LG opens up pre-orders to their 55-inch curved OLED TV, arrives in Korea in June for $13,500

By: Anthony Garreffa | More News: Displays & Projectors | Posted: Apr 29, 2013 10:29 am

LG have just announced their curved OLED HDTV will be reaching Korean living rooms in the coming months, a perfect display for some multi-monitor PC gaming, in my opinion.

lg_opens_up_pre_orders_to_their_55_inch_curved_oled_tv_arrives_in_korea_in_june_for_13_500

LG Korea have announced through a press release that pre-orders for their curved 55-inch OLED HDTV will go on sale in South Korea for $13,515. The 55-inch curved OLED display is just 4.3mm thick, and is a $3,600 premium over their standard, non-curved display.

By: Anthony Garreffa | More News: Mobile Devices, Tablets & Phones | Posted: Apr 29, 2013 9:31 am

Some leaked specifications on Samsung's upcoming Galaxy Note III have floated onto the Internet, and if they're correct, we'll be looking at the fastest smartphone on the market. Check out the specs:

rumortt_galaxy_note_iii_to_feature_8_core_processor_5_99_inch_1080p_display_and_3gb_of_ram

  • Samsung Exynos 5 Octa Chipset
  • Quad Core 2.0 GHz ARM Cortex A15 + Quad Core 1.7 GHz ARM Cortex A7
  • 3 GB Of RAM
  • 5.99 Inch 1080p (1920 x 1080 pixels) Super AMOLED display
  • 32 GB Of Internal Storage
  • MicroSD Card Support
  • Removable Battery
  • Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean
  • S-Pen

We should hear more about the Note III at IFA 2013 which is in October, until then we'll just have to dream of this phone. What do you think? An 8-core smartphone with 3GB of RAM and a 1080p display. This thing is better specced than most PCs!

Microsoft working on visual redesigns of their platforms, including Xbox and Bing

By: Anthony Garreffa | More News: Business, Financial & Legal | Posted: Apr 29, 2013 8:27 am

It looks like Microsoft are working on rebrandings of multiple services under their wings, which includes Bing, Skype, Yammer and Xbox. Speaking at Design Day 2013, Wolff Olins creative director Todd Simmons and Windows Phone design studio manager Albert Shum talked about the challenges involved when rebranding a company like Microsoft.

microsoft_working_on_visual_redesigns_of_their_platforms_including_xbox_and_bing

Simmons said: "We're still trying to figure out how to put a consumer face on this brand, as an ecosystem". The discussion turned to the creation of the Windows 8 logo, but also talked about revamping other MS brands, where Simmons added: "Other brands are coming along too. Bing, Skype, Yammer, Xbox -- everything is under development".

Considering the next-generation Xbox is only months away, not would be the perfect time to unveil a complete new look for multiple of Microsoft's services.
