Nokia executive who was responsible for the tight relationship with Microsoft, has left the company

By: Anthony Garreffa | More News: Business, Financial & Legal | Posted: Apr 26, 2013 10:28 am

Nokia's relationship with Microsoft hasn't taken off as much as most thought it would when it was announced, but the relationship itself is a big deal. The man behind this relationship, Steven Overman, has left Nokia.

nokia_executive_who_was_responsible_for_the_tight_relationship_with_microsoft_has_left_the_company

Overman was the vice president for global branding and marketing strategy with the Finnish company, and was responsible for drafting the partnership with Microsoft, as well as handling the marketing for Nokia's Lumia and Asha smartphones.

He joined Nokia in 2010, coming from a position at Lowe Worldwide where he was in charge of a marketing team that handled Nokia's account. Nokia have pushed out some great marketing campaigns, but have struggled against the juggernauts that are Apple and Samsung. Lumia Windows Phone shipments increased to 5.6 million units in Q1 2013, up from 4.4 million in Q4 2012.

DHS' new intrusion detection and prevention system raises security concerns

By: Anthony Garreffa | More News: Hacking & Security | Posted: Apr 26, 2013 9:30 am

Cyberthreats are the new way of slowly removing citizens' privacy, and now the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is preparing to deploy a very powerful new version of their EINSTEIN intrusion-detection system that is built to detect attacks and malware, especially when it comes to e-mail.

dhs_new_intrusion_detection_and_prevention_system_raises_security_concerns

But because this new version of EINSTEIN is able to read electronic content, it is raising privacy concerns. DHS has recognized this, and have just issued a "privacy impact assessment" on what they're calling EINSTEIN 3 Accelerated, the intrusion detection and prevention system that is expected to be made available as a managed security service from ISPs to monitor the ".gov" traffic to and from civilian agencies and Executive Branch departments.

The DHS has said that EINSTEIN 3 might be able to collect "personally identifiable information" (PII) in some instances where this network security system will not just monitor but also prevent threats by clocking traffic in order to detect a cyberthreat or potential cyberthreat.

US ambassador to Australia asks Australians to stop pirating Game of Thrones

By: Anthony Garreffa | More News: HT & Movies | Posted: Apr 26, 2013 8:30 am

US ambassador to Australia, Jeffrey Bleich, has reached out to his official Facebook page telling Australians to stop pirating popular HBO show, Game of Thrones. He wrote:

us_ambassador_to_australia_asks_australians_to_stop_pirating_game_of_thrones

As the ambassador here in Australia, it was especially troubling to find out that Australian fans were some of the worst offenders with among the highest piracy rates of Game of Thrones in the world.

The comments came on April 23, marking the 17th annual UN World Book and Copyright Day. He added:

I realise that fans of Game of Thrones who have used illegal file-sharing sites have reasons. They will say it was much easier to access through these sites, or that they got frustrated by the delay in the first season, or their parents wouldn't pay for a subscription, or they will complain about some other issue with copyright laws. But none of those reasons is an excuse - stealing is stealing.

LG plans to launch flexible OLED smartphone before the end of this year

By: Anthony Garreffa | More News: Mobile Devices, Tablets & Phones | Posted: Apr 26, 2013 7:29 am

LG have had a great first quarter, shipping record numbers of smartphones, but it looks like their end of year goals are set to have them see even more success.

lg_plans_to_launch_flexible_oled_smartphone_before_the_end_of_this_year

Yoon Bu-hyun, vice president of LG's mobile business, has confirmed that the South Korean electronics giant are set to launch a smartphone with a flexible OLED display before the end of the year. This may sound great in practice, but the entire smartphone won't be flexible. There aren't any flexible batteries or other components available, but it will be the first consumer device to feature a wraparound display.

We should expect LG's flexible OLED smartphone sometime in Q4 of this year.

Google reports that government content removal requests have increased

By: Anthony Garreffa | More News: Business, Financial & Legal | Posted: Apr 26, 2013 6:37 am

The government is thirsty for content removal according to Google, who says they've seen a huge increase in the amount of content removal requests in the past year.

google_reports_that_government_content_removal_requests_have_increased

Google have reported that government content removal requests have increased from 1,811 in the first half of last year, to 2,285 in the second half of the year. 39% of these takedowns were related to cases of alleged defamation, with 18% of the takedown requests said to be related to privacy and security concerns, says Google.

Google have also added that they received "a request to remove a YouTube video that allegedly defames the President" of Argentina "by depicting her in a compromising position". There was also a "request from legal representatives of a member of the executive branch" of Israel's government "to remove two YouTube videos for alleged defamation". South Korea also chimed in, with a "request to remove a YouTube video that allegedly defamed a presidential candidate".

Yahoo CEO joins the Jawbone board of directors

By: Anthony Garreffa | More News: Business, Financial & Legal | Posted: Apr 26, 2013 5:37 am

AllThingsD has an exclusive report that Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer has just joined the Jawbone board of directors, the company behind those wireless headsets, Jambox speakers and the Up personal fitness wristbands. AllThingsD's report comes from 'sources at the Silicon Valley Internet giant'.

yahoo_ceo_joins_the_jawbone_board_of_directors

The Yahoo CEO has already sat in on a Jawbone board meeting, according to the same sources. Mayer had been talking to Jawbone about becoming a board member before she even became the CEO of Yahoo. Mayer will fit in well, as her previous job at Google had her working with products, aesthetics and high-level design.

Having Mayer sit in on the board will help Jawbone in more ways than one, as she'll bring her experience of scaling businesses from small to large, as well as her deep technical expertise.

Samsung Q1 earnings are also strong, $6.4 billion in profits for the three-month period

By: Anthony Garreffa | More News: Business, Financial & Legal | Posted: Apr 26, 2013 3:29 am

We've seen so many financial reports this week, and now South Korean electronics giant Samsung have joined in the race. Their Q1 2013 numbers are strong, with operating profits of $7.9 billion, a huge 50% gain year-over-year for the same three-month period.

samsung_q1_earnings_are_also_strong_6_4_billion_in_profits_for_the_three_month_period

Revenues were a hefty $47.6 billion, with a net profit of $6.45 billion. Samsung have said that strong smartphone sales as well as reductions in marketing expenses helped boost their IT & Mobile Communications division to revenues of $29.6 billion alone. Their revenues were hit though, taking in 6% less cash than the previous quarter, something they've pegged on a slow economy, equating to lower TV and home appliance sales.

Three new GTA V character trailers to arrive next week

By: Anthony Garreffa | More News: Gaming | Posted: Apr 26, 2013 2:36 am

Rockstar have just teased us by announcing that there are no less than three new trailers to Grand Theft Auto V coming next week, the new look at GTA V is set to arrive in the form of three character trailers.

three_new_gta_v_character_trailers_to_arrive_next_week

The tease was simple, which said "Michael. Franklin. Trevor. Trailer 4.30". GTA V's characters are all said to have their own unique identity, story and skills, it would make sense to introduce them separately. The new trailers should hopefully be accompanied by some nice new footage of the open-world game.

Haswell-powered MacBook said to go into production in May, launch in late summer

By: Trace Hagan | More News: Laptops | Posted: Apr 26, 2013 12:37 am

According to Ming-Chi Kuo, an analyst for KGI Securities, Apple will start production on a Haswell-powered MacBook sometime in May in preparation for a late summer launch. A late summer launch flies in the face of what Tim Cook said during an investor call: "Our teams are hard at work on some amazing new hardware, software, and services that we can't wait to introduce in the fall and into 2014."

haswell_powered_macbook_said_to_go_into_production_in_may_launch_in_late_summer

Kuo expects the MacBook line to feature a vastly updated design and only Retina displays. Intel is currently thought to be planning to release Haswell at Computex in the first part of June, so this timeline matches up with Intel's schedule, lending some credibility to this claim.

We don't doubt that Apple will make use of Intel's Haswell CPUs, it's just a matter of when exactly they make the switch and to what degree they update the MacBook line.

PS4 lead architect says PS4 launch will have best launch games in PlayStation history

By: Trace Hagan | More News: Gaming | Posted: Apr 26, 2013 12:07 am

PlayStation 4's lead architect, Mark Cerny, says that the PlayStation 4 launch will feature the strongest set of launch games in PlayStation 4. In an interview with Gamasutra, Cerny talks about the PlayStation 4 and how it is so easy to code for thanks to its unified architecture.

ps4_lead_architect_says_ps4_launch_will_have_best_launch_games_in_playstation_history

The biggest thing is we didn't want the hardware to be a puzzle that programmers would be needing to solve in order to make quality titles. There was huge performance [in the PS3], but in order to unlock that performance, you really needed to study it and learn unique ways of using the hardware.

Most importantly, Cerny says, "The launch lineup for PlayStation 4 -- though I unfortunately can't give the title count -- is going to be stronger than any prior PlayStation hardware." Gamasutra has the full interview at source #1.

Google Drive gets auto sync, will sync all files for offline access

By: Trace Hagan | More News: Internet & Websites | Posted: Apr 25, 2013 11:32 pm

Google has released a second update for Google Drive just shortly after the one released earlier today. This latest update will allow all of your Google Drive documents to sync in the background so that you don't have to plan ahead. With this new feature, anytime you're offline, you can simply head to drive.Google.com

google_drive_gets_auto_sync_will_sync_all_files_for_offline_access

Internet outages and long plane rides shouldn't prevent you from working in Google Drive. Set up offline access so that the next time you're offline you'll still be able to view Google documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, shuffle folders around, and edit files stored in your Google Drive folder.

  1. Click More on the left-hand side of the screen.
  2. Select Offline Docs.
  3. Setting up offline access is a two-step process. First, click the blue button that says Get the app. If you already have the app installed, you won't need to complete this step.
  4. You'll be taken to the Chrome web store. Click Add to Chrome in the upper-right corner of the browser window.
  5. Once the app is installed, you'll be taken to a Chrome page with the Google Drive app icon. To return to Drive, click the Google Drive icon.
  6. On the right side of the dialog on the Offline Docs page, click the blue button that says Enable offline.

This is a feature that is already present in Chrome OS. Google may one day bring this feature to other browsers, though it's not clear if they have plans to do so right now.

RumorTT: After Microsoft confirms Xbox launch, details regarding the console surface

By: Trace Hagan | More News: Gaming | Posted: Apr 25, 2013 11:05 pm

Paul Thurrott, a known Microsoft fanboy, has released information he claims is accurate for the upcoming Xbox 720. Most will remember that Thurrott was the first to announce that Microsoft changed the launch date for the next Xbox from April 24 to May 21. Interestingly enough, Microsoft unveiled the May 21 event on April 24.

rumortt_after_microsoft_confirms_xbox_launch_details_regarding_the_console_surface

Thurrott expects (claims?) that the Xbox 720 will be released sometime in November with two pricing versions. For $499, you get the console flat-out. Or, you can buy the console for $299 with a $10/month two-year Xbox LIVE Gold contract. The $299 version ultimately ends up costing $539.

Thurrott also says that the May 21 event is just a teaser and that the full unveiling will occur at E3 in early June 2013. You can read all of his claims on the WindowsITPro site.

Apple's WWDC tickets sell out in just two minutes, smashing Google I/O record

By: Trace Hagan | More News: Business, Financial & Legal | Posted: Apr 25, 2013 10:33 pm

Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference seems to be as popular as ever with tickets for the event selling out in just two minutes. Part of the reason tickets sold out so quickly is Apple announced when they would be going on sale a day before. Another seems to be that Apple's iOS platform continues to prove popular among developers.

apple_s_wwdc_tickets_sell_out_in_just_two_minutes_smashing_google_i_o_record

Compared to last year, this year's WWDC sell out was a landslide. Last year took several hours for tickets to sell out. And tickets aren't cheap: each one will set you back $1,599, placing them out of the price range for many indie developers. Google I/O, on the other hand, has a current sell-out record of about 49 minutes.

Phil Schiller:

We look forward to gathering at WWDC 2013 with the incredible community of iOS and OS X developers. Our developers have had the most prolific and profitable year ever, and we're excited to show them the latest advances in software technologies and developer tools to help them create innovative new apps. We can't wait to get new versions of iOS and OS X into their hands at WWDC.

Amazon beats Wall Street estimates, revenue in at $16bn, net income at $82m

By: Trace Hagan | More News: Business, Financial & Legal | Posted: Apr 25, 2013 10:03 pm

Amazon is quite the online reseller. It's one of the few giants in the online marketplace, rivaled only by Ebay and a few others. Today, they reported their first-quarter earnings. The reported earnings managed to be mixed. On one hand, they performed way better than expectations in terms of EPS. On the other, Amazon's sales numbers fell just short of Wall Street's estimates for total sales.

Amazon Studios is working on a new way to greenlight TV shows. The pilots are out in the open where everyone can have a say. I have my personal picks and so do members of the Amazon Studios team, but the exciting thing about our approach is that our opinions don't matter. Our customers will determine what goes into full-season production. We hope Amazon Originals can become yet another way for us to create value for Prime members.

Amazon pulled in earnings-per-sahre of $0.18, beating expectations of just $0.08. Amazon also had total sales of $16.07 billion, falling just short of analyst expectations of $16.2 billion. You can read Amazon's full earnings announcement here.

RumorTT: iPhone 5S now said to be launching in early September

By: Trace Hagan | More News: Mobile Devices, Tablets & Phones | Posted: Apr 25, 2013 9:33 pm

The latest rumor to pop up regarding the iPhone 5S is that it will be launching in early September. During Apple's investor call on Tuesday, Tim Cook said that Apple would be announcing numerous products in the fall 2013 time period. This new rumor likely stems from that announcement. With that warning aside, let's dive in.

rumortt_iphone_5s_now_said_to_be_launching_in_early_september

The latest report comes from Citigroup Global Securities who state that Apple will launch both the iPhone 5S and a low-cost iPhone in early September. The report also says that Apple is planning to launch a special TD-SCDMA version for China Mobile in late September or early October. China Mobile is one of the major carriers in China and makes up a large market for Apple to attract.

The iPhone 5S is expected to come with an Apple-designed A7 processor, 12MP camera, and iOS 7.

Intel Ivy Bridge-E benchmarked, tests show it's 5-10% faster than Sandy Bridge-E

By: Trace Hagan | More News: CPU, APU & Chipsets | Posted: Apr 25, 2013 9:01 pm

Toppc, a member of Chinese overclocking forum Coolaler.com, has managed to get his hands on a pre-release Ivy Bridge-E CPU. This new CPU is the successor to the Sandy Bridge-E line of CPUs on Intel's LGA 2011 platform. It's widely expected to feature up to 12 cores and 30MB of L3 cache.

intel_ivy_bridge_e_benchmarked_tests_show_its_5_10_faster_than_sandy_bridge_eintel_ivy_bridge_e_benchmarked_tests_show_its_5_10_faster_than_sandy_bridge_e

The results from the comprehensive benchmark suite show that the Ivy Bridge-E CPU is somewhere between 5 and 10 percent faster than the current generation Sandy Bridge-E processors. The benchmark suite included SuperPi mod 1.6, CPU Mark '99, WPrime 1.63, Cinebench 11.5, 3DMark Vantage (CPU score), and 3DMark 06 (CPU score).

The new line of Ivy Bridge-E CPUs are expected to launch towards the end of the second half of this year. They should be mostly drop-in compatible with current LGA 2011 systems, though you'll likely need a BIOS upgrade from your manufacturer.

Google Glass battery life is only 30 minutes when taking video

By: Trace Hagan | More News: Wearable Computing | Posted: Apr 25, 2013 8:33 pm

If you're looking forward to taking video with your shiny new Google Glass headset, I've got some bad news. According to Robert Scoble, a user with the Explorer Edition of Google Glass, shooting video can drain the battery in as little as 30 minutes. "One six-minute video I did took 20 percent of the battery."

google_glass_battery_life_is_only_30_minutes_when_taking_video

This could end up being a deal breaker for a large majority of customers. Google has maintained that the Explorer Edition of Glass isn't for the mainstream consumer. As such, it's not the final version and still has bugs and issues to work out.

Google does have an issue with regards to battery life. They need to squeeze the most out of the smallest battery they can. If they increase the size of the battery, that extra weight takes away from the comfort during wearing.

Apple fined for selling unauthorized work in iBookstore

By: Trace Hagan | More News: Business, Financial & Legal | Posted: Apr 25, 2013 8:01 pm

Apple has been hit with a fine after selling an unauthorized work via its iBookstore. China's Writer's Right Protection Union sued on behalf of three authors who had their works published on the iBookstore platform. The Beijing No. 2 Intermediate People's Court ruled in favor of the Union, stating that Apple didn't verify the publishers had the right to upload the works.

apple_fined_for_selling_unauthorized_work_in_ibookstore

The writers involved this time include Mai Jia, whose books are often on best-seller lists across the country. In this way, Apple has the capability to know the uploaded books on its online store violated the writer's copyright.

So, how much was Apple fined for this neglect? 730,000 yuan, or about $118,000. Small potatoes for a company like Apple, but it does start to add up after awhile. It's likely not large enough to encourage Apple to implement real change to prevent something like this from happening again. Real change would involve hiring more people, which costs money.

Twitter for Mac updated with Retina support, 14 new languages

By: Trace Hagan | More News: Software | Posted: Apr 25, 2013 7:29 pm

Twitter's client built for Mac OS X has been updated with Retina support, along with several other features and improvements. This marks the first major update in almost two years. Aside from Retina display support, Twitter has added simplified photo-sharing options and support for 14 new languages.

twitter_for_mac_updated_with_retina_support_14_new_languages

Now Twitter is even more vibrant and detailed on the highest resolution Mac notebooks. With this update, Tweets will be clearer and sharper, creating a more vivid experience.

Twitter has also renewed its commitment to the Twitter for Mac application. Ben Sandofsky, product lead for Twitter, tweeted that he's "taking a break from iOS to work on Twitter for Mac full time." This should hopefully result in more features and improvements in the coming weeks and months.

However, a Twitter spokesperson was slightly less forthcoming: "We don't have anything specific to share in regards to future plans for the app."
