Upcoming AMD, NVIDIA GPU plans get an airing

It is believed that Q1 2009, shall see the launch of AMD's follow-up to its highly acclaimed RV770 GPU technology. The RV870, claimed to be branded under the HD 5800 moniker, will be based on a 40nm fabrication process and, supports the DirectX 11 API.

NVIDIA's offering in the same time frame, shall be the 40nm GT212 and then, in Q2 2009, the 40nm GT216 which will adopt GDDR5 memory technology and, it is claimed, will also have a dual GPU component to it.

It won't be until Q4 2009 that NVIDIA's next generation GT300 GPU offerings, will see the light of day. AMD will be ready, however, with a dual RV870 offering, if rumours are to be believed.

Still, the Santa Clara, CA based company isn't quite ready to call it a day this year. The 55nm GT206 and a Dual GT200 SKU are both expected within this quarter.
