Google considers opening Development Stack

By: (more) | Posted: Nov 10, 2008 3:09 pm

The Inquirer has some interesting news up about the possibility of Google opening up its development platform. It seems they listened to a speech given by Dave Girouard a Google Big Wig at the Web 2.0 conference and came away all bubbly and warm inside.

The wax on enthusiastically about how this move (if real) will change the world of the web. Although I am not convinced that they (Google) will truly ever completely open up the development stack to outside developers it will be interesting to see what they do now that this comment is on the table.

Google considers opening Development Stack

"We want to open up the Google stack, the Google platform in many, many ways, and in the end if we do it right, you will have the same access to Google that our own developers do" said Girouard.

Although Girouard didn't go into specifics, his statement has interesting and exciting implications. Girouard's comments could be taken to mean tht outside developers will soon be able to try their hands at building their own Google apps, or adding bits and pieces to existing Google apps. It could also lead to better customisation, and even revenue generating models like Google app stores, similar to Apple's Iphone platform.
