nVidia has not taped out GT212 yet

By: (more) | Posted: Jan 14, 2009 8:05 pm

Something fresh from the Rumor Mill; it seems the highly anticipated and rumored GT212 might never make it to silicon.

According the Charlie "Bumpgate" Demerjian, due to the financial outlook and the delay of the 40nm shrink certain projects will have to be dumped.
The GT212 looks like it will be one of them as it has not even taped out.

He goes on to say that even if it still remains it would probably not see daylight until very late Q4 or next year.

Given a test run/first silicon time after tapeout of ~10 weeks, and then another 12 for production, that would put it in Q3 anyway, sitting on top of the GT300, if that is on time. I wouldn't hold your breath on that one either, with the engineering delays of 2007 and 2008 haunting them, it will be a minor miracle if anything comes out when it 'should' this year.

If there is any delay to the GT212, you add approximately 1Q to the timeline for each new spin. Since Nvidia hasn't been able to do so much as an optical shrink right in the past 18 months, I guess they saw the obvious and are seriously considering pulling the plug.
