Intel Moves GPU and into Atom Successor

By: (more) | Posted: Jan 19, 2009 1:54 pm

Intel is moving one step closer to a gauntlet thrown down by nVidia some time ago. The story goes something like this.

nVidia challenged Intel to build a complete SOC (System on Chip) offering. This was to include everything from the CPU, GPU, Southbridge, Northbridge etc. Now, if an article over at VRZone is correct, Intel will be moving the North Bridge and GPU into the nest version of the Atom.

The new CPU is codenamed Pine-Trail-D and is expected to launch in single core versions in Q4 2009. Dual Core flavors should show up in Q1 2010.

Intel is planning to integrate northbridge functions such as the memory controller and graphics core into the CPU to reduce the footprint further to allow even smaller form factor nettop and netbook. Intel is touting a 70% reduction in total kit package size and a 50% reduction in total kit TDP.
