US Supreme Court Finally Kills Web Porn Law

By: (more) | Posted: Jan 22, 2009 2:35 pm

Score one for Net Neutrality in the US. The US Supreme Court has finally struck down the censorship bill dubbed the Child Online Protection Act.

This bill would have allowed the Government powers to censor Websites all in the name of preventing Children from accidentally viewing pornography.
Many rights activists stated that this act would have been a violation of peoples constitutionally protected free speech.

The bill (which would have never worked anyway) sounds good on paper but it is not the Government's place to do this sort of work. It is on the Parents to monitor and police their kids (including friends of your children when they are at your house).

"For over a decade the government has been trying to thwart freedom of speech on the Internet, and for years the courts have been finding the attempts unconstitutional," ACLU senior staff attorney Chris Hansen said Wednesday.

"It is not the role of the government to decide what people can see and do on the Internet," he said in a statement. "Those are personal decisions that should be made by individuals and their families."

"The court's decision not to review COPA for a third time affirms what we have been saying all along -- the government has no right to censor protected speech on the Internet, and it cannot reduce adults to hearing and seeing only speech that the government considers suitable for children," added ACLU legal director Steven Shapiro.
