IBM Looking to Buy Sun

There is some news for the server crowd and more to the point the Data Center Crowd.

 

It looks like IBM is in the market to buy someone, that someone is Sun Microsystems. The buyout could be the opening shots in a Data Center war between the big companies like HP, IBM and Dell.

 

Previously IBM had made little effort in promoting its Data Center products but a buyout of Sun could be an indication that they are changing focus.

IBM Looking to Buy Sun

For years, IBM seemed to be moving away from such competition in the hardware arena. It pooh-poohed the low margins associated with computers, and got rid of its PC wing. The company has also moved its research and development away from areas like hard drives and chips and toward software.

 

In fact, IBM seemed to have little response to H-P and Cisco's encroachment into its turf. The Sun acquisition appears to be its answer.

 

Now, a new paradigm has emerged of data-center superstores. Tech giants apparently expect that customers will want to rely on them for everything, from services to software to computers and networking gear, rather than pick from a variety of companies that specialize in each area.
