Hulu Begins Encrypting its HTML

By: (more) | Posted: Apr 1, 2009 6:44 pm

Hulu has decided to try and block plug-in applications from parsing their site for content.

To do this they have decided to encrypt the HTML that is sent to browsers where it is decrypted by Javascript. This is supposed to make it unable to be read by anything other than a regular browser. The concept is pretty simple idea really, nice and clean. Well...it would have been except for the tiny problem that there is already a fix to this little prevention scheme.

It seems that TunerFreeMCE's Martin Millmore caught the Hulu encryption and was able to get it sorted very fast. We are not sure what Hulu's next move will be.

That's quite a lot of effort just for fun, so I assume that is to stop screen scrapers from parsing content.

That means that no new programs will be added to Hulu in TunerFreeMCE at the moment, but your old list of programs should continue to work fine (I put in some defensive code recently to not wipe out the list if nothing was found), and I am working on code to decode the new content.
