Windows 7 Starter Hardware Limits Leaked

By: (more) | Software News | Posted: May 25, 2009 11:24 am

With Windows 7 rumored to be coming in right around six months time, it should come as no surprise that more juicy details surrounding specific editions are emerging.

Windows 7 Starter Hardware Limits Leaked

This time around it concerns the hardware limitations for the Windows 7 Starter Edition and interestingly enough these limitations will carry over to the Home Basic edition in China as well. While it was rumored that the Starter Edition would have a limitation of only allowing three applications running at one time, this limit seems to have been cut from the final specs.

Concerning hardware, perhaps the biggest limitation is that the screen size must not exceed 10.2". This will limit the install base of the Starter Edition the most, making it mostly suitable for netbooks and not much else. Memory will need to be 1GB or less and storage will be capped at 250GB for conventional hard drives and 64GB for SSDs.

The CPU will also have a 2GHz limitation, and will also be limited to chips which have a TDP of 15W or less. This means it will be suited most for the likes of the Intel Atom and Via Nano processors.
