By: (more) | Posted: Jun 29, 2009 9:53 pm

It's tipping up to be a busy day for Samsung, with news earlier today the firm would be releasing an Nvidia Ion based system and now an announcement about its latest series of ARM11-based application processors, with the launch of its new 45nm S5P6440 chip.

Samsung is saying the catchily named S5P6440 was designed for 45nm low-power CMOS process technology and delivers the holy trinity of lower power, increased performance and lower cost.

The chips are based on the ARM1176 core which sports clock speeds of either 533MHz or 667MHz and is apparently best suited for consumer gadgets which run Windows CE or Linux platforms, according to the firm.

Samsung's Senior Veep of Sales and Marketing for the System LSI division, Dr. Kwang-hyun Kim, said in a press release that the S5P6440 application processor was designed especially to "offer substantial improvements in CPU performance at low power, high quality graphics capability, and lower system BOM cost."

With its integrated 2D acceleration hardware, the chippery also boasts support for OpenVG graphics and Samsung reckons the integrated DRAM controller is flexible enough to support both mobile DDR and DDR2 memory components.
