I was reading that Intel's new 1.6GHz Clarksfield will have a TDP of 45 Watts. Now at first I thought that was pretty hot for a mobile CPU. But then I started taking a look at other CPUs and in particular those from AMD and Intel's older Quad and Dual Core CPUs.

It would seem that while 45 Watts is pretty high it is not that far off of the mark when you consider AMD's Dual Core Turion X2 and Atlhon X2 run at 35 Watts. Intel's Core 2 Extreme CPUs run at a max of 45 Watts (for the quad) and an average of 44Watts. By comparison the average Core 2 Duo runs just as hot as AMD's offerings.

I am not entirely sure why some feel that the new quad core, eight-thread CPU should be cooler than current but it seems to me that it is right in line with what is out now and not too much above AMD dual core mobile CPUs. If it were in the 65 Watts range I would have a problem but as it stands. I think that Intel is just in for a round of bad press in the near future.
