Intel Planning IGP version of Larrabee

By: (more) | CPU, APU & Chipsets News | Posted: Aug 20, 2009 2:20 pm

Wow I guess you learn something new every day. Today there is news that Intel is planning to make an IGP (integrated graphics processor) version of Larrabee. This comes as news considering the discrete version is not even ready yet.

Right now Larrabee is an interesting concept that could potentially set the graphics world on its ear. The design features a many cored x86 layout and should be a extremely powerful parallel processing device.

However right now Larrabee is having TDP problems, the new chip simply runs too hot. So while Intel figures that one out the IGP version has to wait. After all you cannot have a high TDP IGP, it simply won't work.

Still this is a move Intel has to make to compete in the mobile and entry level market. As it stands right now nVidia and ATi are cleaning the floor with the current Intel offering.
