While Intel and AMD race towards six cores and Intel Pushes HyperThreading to squeeze out two threads per core IBM steps in and kicks their card house down.

IBM has just announced the specs for the Power 7 CPU. This massive CPU will be made on a 45nm process and will feature eight cores. Yes that is right a full eight cores. Each of these cores can run four simultaneous threads. So while Nehalem can push up to 8 instructions per cycle and Gulftown an impressive 12; Power 7 from IBM and execute a staggering 32 per cycle.

To add icing on the cake each CPU will have dual DDR3 memory controllers (total of 100Gb/s) 32MB of L3 Cache using eDRAM instead of the normal SRAM that is typically used.

In all Power 7 is a simply impressive CPU, it is sure to end up in IBM's next super computers maybe bringing them back to the top of the list.

Do you think they will send us one for review?
