Sony signs deal to put Chrome on the Vaio

By: (more) | Internet Browsers News | Posted: Sep 1, 2009 12:43 pm

Sony and Google have reached a deal that will put Chrome on every new Vaio. Now while this is a pretty cool idea, I cannot help but think back to the days when Netscape and IE were on the same systems.

Do you remember having both browsers showing up on your desktop? Ah I do, it was the heydays of dialup. 56K modems were the fashion. Of course Packer bell was still selling terrible computers in Sears also but that is another story.

The interesting thing was the even though there was this whole Netscape communicator suite there no one that I knew used it. They all used Internet Explorer. (I think it was version 3). It was becoming better known and in more common use even back then.

So while Sony might put Chrome on the Vaio, it could end up like the Dell/Google desktop deal where most people think about it was shovelware and ignore or delete it.

I do not foresee this having a significant impact on Chrome's market share. This is without getting into the security and privacy issues that have been reported on about the flashy OS.
