Each time word of a new smartphone with a touch screen is heard people start talking about an iPhone killer. The same talk swirled around when the Motorola Droid first surfaced and now that the device is officially available eon Verizon, we know it didn't really come close to the iPhone.

No official first weekend sales numbers have been offered by Motorola or Verizon. Analysts estimate that the handset sold in the area of 100,000 units on opening weekend. Verizon reportedly had 200,000 devices on hand and stores sold about half their stock.

Analysts also say that anyone expecting the Droid to sell like the iPhone had their goals set too high. The Droid is predicted to continue selling well throughout the quarter racking up nice sales for Motorola and Verizon.
