Supercomputers are found in labs and universities the world over and are used for all sorts of scientific, and research purposes. The faster a supercomputer operates, the more efficient and faster that complex scientific results can be delivered. The Oak Ridge National Laboratory has announced that its Jaguar supercomputer has been upgraded.

The machine had its quad-core AMD Opteron CPUs replace with six-core Opteron 6100 series processors. The new processors have given the machine the performance to grab the top spot on the top five supercomputer list

The machine has a peak theoretical performance of 2.3 petaflops/s and performance on the Linpack benchmark of 1.75 petaflops/s. The former number one system was the Roadrunner and it also uses AMD CPUs. AMD powers for of the five machines on the list.
