AT&T offers DataConnect Pass for users needing sporadic mobile broadband

By: (more) | Connectivity & Communications News | Posted: Nov 24, 2009 4:13 pm

Every now and then, I really need mobile broadband access. Typically, this is only the few times per year I am traveling or need to access something on the road. The catch is that I don't want to pay for monthly mobile broadband when I know I won't use the service.

AT&T has announced a new DataConnect Pass service that gives a day pass with 75MB of data for $15, a week pass with 250MB for $30, and a month pass with 500MB for $50. The plans require no contracts to use.

The catch is that the data plans are used via a SIM card rather than compatible modems that plug in via USB. That means that only AT&T-certified notebooks and netbooks will work with the service seriously limiting its appeal. You have to buy the SIM card from AT&T stores. Perhaps a modem accessory for the SIM card will be offered.
