Cherrypal launches $99 Africa netbook and updates Bing

Years ago, when the OLPC was first launched it had the goal of producing a laptop that could be sold for about $100 around the world. The idea was to provide a notebook for children in developing nations to use for education. The OLPC failed to provide a notebook anywhere near the cost it aimed for.

Cherrypal has today announced a new netbook called the Africa that sells for $99. The machine has a tiny 7-inch screen, runs an unnamed 400MHz processor, and has 2GB of flash storage along with 256MB of RAM. The little device runs Windows CE or Linux.

Cherrypal also announced that it has updated the Bing netbook. The machine now has a 13.3-inch screen, 1GB of RAM, 160GB HDD, 1.3MP webcam, and an Intel Atom N280 CPU. The netbook runs Windows XP and will sell for $389.
