Broadcom unveils first single chip Blu-ray solution supporting 3D

By: (more) | HT & Movies News | Posted: Dec 16, 2009 4:59 pm

New technologies are coming to market all the time. A few years ago, the big push was to move to HDTVs and HD broadcasts. Today many people around the world are viewing in HD. The next big push is going to be 3DTV and Broadcom has announced a new chip that supports Blu-ray and 3D.

The new chip is called the BCM7632 and it is the first single die Blu-ray disc chip to ship. It supports streaming internet applications like Netflix 2.0, Pandora, Vudu, CinemaNow, and others. The chip also supports Broadcom WiFi modules.

The coolest feature is that the new chip supports Blu-ray 3D movies. The specifications for 3D Blu-ray aren't finalized at this time. However, Broadcom expects the chip to meet the final specifications.
