Active Media Products releases USB 3.0-ready external 2.5-inch enclosures

By: (more) | Connectivity & Communications News | Posted: Feb 16, 2010 9:16 am

Combining the benefits of SSDs together with USB 3.0 connectivity for external use, Active Media Products has just launched a new series of external 2.5-inch SSDs it calls the Aviator-2.

Supporting up to 4.8Gbit/sec thanks to the use of USB 3.0, these external 2.5-inch SSDs don't suffer the huge bottleneck that comes with using USB 2.0 based external solutions. The Aviator-2 is also quite slim and tidy looking, measuring just over 3 x 5 inches.

You can purchase the Aviator-2 on its own (case only), ready for any standard 2.5-inch SATA HDD ($34.95), or you can get a bundled unit which comes with a 64GB ($259.95) or 128GB ($449.95) Predator X7 SSD thats capable of reading at speeds of up to 200MB/sec.

Active Media Products' press release mentions that secondary power is not required when using the Predator X7 SSD, with the included USB 3.0 cable being sufficient for both power and data transfer. However, to cater to some HDDS which might be a bit more power hungry, a USB 2.0 power cable is also included.
