SK Telecom shows off CPU, RAM, and Android OS all on a SIM card

By: (more) | CPU, APU & Chipsets News | Posted: Feb 18, 2010 5:10 pm

Typically when we see convergence in the mobile phone world it's chips that grow new abilities and cut other chips out of the picture. SK Telecom has unveiled a new SIM card that takes convergence to the next level.

The new SIM card crams storage, CPU, and the Android OS onto the SIM card that you find inside most mobile phones on the market today. That means that everything needed to run a smartphone would be on the SIM card.

The only other chips that would need to be fitted inside the mobile phone would be things like a radio transceiver and display. I also saw a SIM card unveiled at MWC that had WiFi built-in so presumably SK Telecom could add that in as well.
