NVIDIA's next ION comes in two versions

By: (more) | CPU, APU & Chipsets News | Posted: Feb 25, 2010 4:41 am

After being somewhat dissapointed by the 3DMark03 benchmark results of of Acer's ION 2 equipped 532G netbook shared out earlier this week, the folks at Fudzilla have learned that ION 2 actually comes in two separate flavours.

NVIDIA has also said that it won't be calling this next-gen chipset ION 2, continuing on as ION. With that said, we don't yet know how the chipsets will be differentiated by naming schematic.

What we now know is that the slower of the two new versions has less shaders than the current ION. This makes it clear as to why Acer's 532G performance is lacking. The faster of the two new ION chipsets does sound a bit more promising with more shaders on tap than the current ION; albeit not as many as was first anticipated. With that said, NVIDIA's main point of focus seems to be on battery life for the time being.
