Qualcomm MEMS mirasol reflective light screen demonstration

By: (more) | Displays & Projectors News | Posted: Apr 9, 2010 9:05 am

Today we hooked up with the Taiwan PR people for Qualcomm in Taipei City and got a look an upcoming prototype device from Qualcomm MEMS Technologies, a subsidiary of Qualcomm, that uses its impressive direct-view MEMS display mirasol display technology for mobile devices.

Qualcomm says that the technology inspiration is learned from natures own butterfly wings. They say that, "the complex structure on butterfly winds can reflect light so that specific wavelengths interfere with each other to generate the purest and most vibrant color in the natural world." This is set to be the basic description of Qualcomm's mirasol display and the further you get into it and learn about it, the more interesting it becomes.

Luckily we had Nicole Scott on hand from Netbook News on hand to assist us as she attended a press briefing yesterday about the display that I was unable to attend. She gives us a close up look at the small prototype, which we were lucky enough to get our hands-on earlier today to see just how the technology works. Watch the video above!

I hear that Nicole is going to be writing up a technical brief on the technology next week, so stay tuned to Netbook News for that piece.
