Fermi coming to mobile market? - First light on GTX 480M

By: (more) | Laptops News | Posted: May 3, 2010 7:16 am

In the market for a new gaming notebook with gobs of graphical power on tap and little regard for battery life? - Then it would likely be of interest to you that NVIDIA looks to be planning to release its Fermi architecture to the mobile market in the form of the GTX 480M this June.

Indication of this is thanks to notebook maker, Eurocom, listing the GPU part (complete with a whopping 2GB of GDDR5 memory) on its website. The use of the MXM 3.0b interface gives a 256-bit link which ensures bandwidth isn't crippled, but the setup will require a lot of physical room, so expect notebooks with GTX 480M to be heavy, super-sized monsters.

Eurocom gives the option for GTX 480M on its 17-inch Cheetah/Panther and 18.4-inch Leopard desktop replacements, but you can't pair it up with their 15.6-inch Cougar, most likely due to space constraints.

There's a big premium required for this setup, too. In choosing GeForce GTX 480M over the top dog ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5870 for Eurocom's compatible models means a $345 markup; Ouch!
