HP really is full of crap with manure powered data center vision

By: (more) | Posted: May 21, 2010 3:08 pm

I don't know much about cows other than they taste pretty good if you cook them just right. I do know that they poop a lot, which I believe is where the term crap load comes from. HP has some interesting plans that involve all that cow poo and powering data centers.

According to HP, the manure produced by an average dairy cow each day amount to about 120 pounds and can produce 3kWh of electricity. That is enough power for the TV usage in three US homes per day. HP is working to take the manure and turn it into power.

Researchers at HP estimate that dairy farmers could earn about $2 million per year selling power to data centers that was derived from manure. 70% of the methane produced by anaerobic digestion could be used for data center power and cooling. HP doesn't mention how the power would get from the poo electric plant to the data center customers.
