Sony unveils crazy thin rollable OLED display

By: (more) | Displays & Projectors News | Posted: May 26, 2010 7:06 pm

Displays today on our phones and computers are ridged devices that would break readily before they would bend. The ridged display has a lot to do with how small a particular device can be made.

Sony has unveiled its latest creation today that is a flexible OLED display that can be rolled to a diameter of only 4mm while showing moving pictures. The breakthrough was made possible by using a new organic semiconductor called PXX that is easier to build with.

The flexible nature of the screen is thanks to Sony devising a new flexible gate-driver circuit that needs none of the rigid gate-driver circuits of conventional screens. The screen is 4.1-inches wide, has a 420 x 240 resolution, and a contrast ratio of 1000:1.
