Mobile gaming revenue could hit $11.4 billion by 2014

By: (more) | Mobile Devices News | Posted: May 28, 2010 5:45 am

Games aren't just for consoles, PCs, and kitchen tables anymore. Playing games on your mobile devices has become commonplace, especially with the advent of the iPhone and other touch devices. This revenue stream is becoming a huge roaring river, and is only expected to get bigger.

The research firm Gartner predicted last week that gaming revenue worldwide would reach $5.6 billion dollars and is expected to nearly double to $1.4 billion dollars by the end of 2014. While this takes into account a fairly vague idea of "gaming" (apps like Foursquare and the newly developing areas like augmented reality), this is still a huge amount of growth that can only get larger with the continued upswing of smartphone sales, expansion of app stores, and access to games in emerging markets.

Gartner estimates that 70-80 percent of all mobile consumer apps downloaded are mobile games and only 60-70 percent of those are free. This trend is expected to continue climbing for at least three years, especially with games becoming much more palatable on devices like the iPhone and Android. Who knew Bejeweled could become such big business?
