Sick of squinting at that tiny screen on your mobile phone? It's a problem that comes hand-in-hand with the shrinking size consumer electronics devices and Sony may well have an answer with this super-flexible full color OLED display. Could we soon see mobile phones with pencil form factors and roll out displays?

MIT researchers have also taken up the challenge of improving the human computer interface - this time in the arena of gesture recognition. The researchers have developed coloured gloves that, although they may not win any fashion awards, can be used with a standard webcam and some clever software to create a cheap solution for on-screen commands or control gestures.

There's also been some BIG firsts in the world of technology and innovation this week. The world's first truly synthetic organism has been created by transplanting a synthetic genome into a recipient cell, an achievement that could pave the way for the development of powerful new drugs, biofuels or other useful chemicals using bacteria engineered in a lab.

We've also seen a scientist in the UK become the first to infect himself with a computer virus and in an event that could be mistaken for science fiction, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) has launched an experimental "space yacht" that propels itself using a massive 14 m square solar sail that 's only 1/10th the thickness of a human hair.

While up in the air, the record breaking flight this week of Boeing's X-51 WaveRider is also worth noting. The unmanned aerial vehicle is the first to fly at supersonic speeds for almost three and a half minutes and during Wednesday's test in the skies off the southern California coast, it hit hypersonic speeds - that's more than five times the speed of sound.

Expo 2010 in Shanghai is providing us with some tantalizing glimpses of what transport will be like in the future. This week we've looked at two concepts SAIC - the carbon dioxide absorbing, oxygen emitting YeZ and the all-in-one (we're talking automobile bedroom, office and gym) SheLL concept car.

Finally, we've also found a couple of new ways to have fun this week with the latest hydrogen fuel-cell remote control car drivetrain from Horizon, some eye-catching bike-wheel LED art from Tokyo and a high-tech punching bag with built-in sensors and lights that direct you where to land your fists of fury.
