VIA KT400 in April

By: (more) | Posted: Mar 26, 2002 7:46 pm

The Inquirer have a story running which suggests VIA will announce their VIA KT400 chipset sometime in April for the Athlon platform, possibly phasing out DDR 333 before it really even gets going. Companies are already announcing availability of DDR 400 aka PC3200 even though it hasn't been approved by JEDEC as yet. It seems DDR 333 may have been one big flop, time will tell - I know for a fact Kingmax already have DDR 400 in production, Hardware Pub also reviewed it a couple days ago. Getting back on track, the KT400 is suggested to feature AGP 8x bringing it into line with other chipsets from manufacturers like SiS.

That may make the DDR 333 memory type a short lived phenomenon, although we detect here at the INQUIRER signs of fear, uncertainty and doubt on behalf of the mobo manufacturers.
This may be the case to a certain degree, but I think we'll still see manufacturers releasing new boards based on this chipset come April when samples are due to ship.
