Apple says Flurry and others can't capture device data anymore

By: (more) | Software News | Posted: Jun 3, 2010 6:10 pm

Steve Jobs has never been one to play what he thinks or feels about things close to the vest. Jobs will say when something makes him mad or bothers the company. Recently Jobs has set his sights on analytics firm Flurry.

Jobs said, "Some company called Flurry had data on devices that we were using on our campus - new devices. They were getting this info by getting developers to put software in their apps that sent info back to this company! So we went through the roof. It's violating our privacy policies, and it's p***ing us off! So we said we're only going to allow analytics that don't give our device info - only for the purpose of advertising."

Flurry was one of the best sources for early info on new software and products from Apple because its developer network had tracking code in apps that capture details on the devices using the app. Apple says that it will only allow third party applications going forward that don't capture device specific data.
