HTC acquires French mobile software company Abaxia

By: (more) | Mobile Devices News | Posted: Jun 8, 2010 1:47 am

Abaxia, a mobile software company which specializes in making mobile phone home screens, has been acquired by HTC for an undisclosed purchase price. Abaxia's software is featured on 60 different handset models with 25 million total phones in use.

Abaxia has several different customers, many of which are direct competitors of HTC including Samsung, Vodafone, Orange, Nokia and Motorola. HTC did not comment on whether Abaxia would continue designing software for their competitors. Abaxia's software employs a consistent home screen over all handsets it is used on, making it easier for apps and services to be employed on different phones.

It would seem that HTC is attempting to strengthen the team designing the Android OS with new ideas and technology. Acquiring Abaxia's patents is also reported to possibly give HTC a leg up in their patent infringement legal battles with Apple over their user interface.
