iPhone 4 pre-orders went through the roof on opening day

By: (more) | Mobile Devices News | Posted: Jun 18, 2010 11:08 am

Sheesh, how's this for a success rate... Apple have just made an official statement regarding the amount of pre-orders they'd taken on their first day for the new iPhone 4G.

Between Apple and its carrier partners, there were pre-orders well in excess of 600,000 before the day was out, much higher than Apple anticipated which resulted in a bit of a frenzy with many order and approval system malfunctions. A lot of disgruntled folks who were frantically re-trying gave up in the end out of frustration.

AT&T were stunned by the rate of pre-orders being snapped up and even their new ordering mechanism quickly made it known it wasn't up to the task. On the day of launch the companty said they were caught unprepared for this level of activity. Their total pre-order count amassed to about 10 times bigger than the iPhone 3G S's.

With that said, AT&T has decided to 'temporarily' suspend any further pre-orders for the unit.
