Tech companies look to reduce cell phone distractions

Most of us have heard stories about someone having a mishap while texting. Whether it's walking into street signs, people, or even a manhole as happened to a 15 year old girl last year, distracted walking and driving is becoming a huge problem for a our more and more phone-centric world. Studies have shown texting while driving can be more dangerous than driving drunk.

Lot of companies are trying to take steps to reduce these incidents. Aliph, the company that has developed Bluetooth devices such as the Jawbone, is incorporating voice to text technology to take the typing out of texting and Caller ID into the headset. Other tech like Text Vision and Type n Talk use the phone's camera to show what's in front of you while you text, like a reverse backup camera.

"I don't think we're going to eliminate people from walking into things outright and of course we want people to be responsible, but what we're trying to do is eliminate the friction point ... and give the user back a little mental bandwith," said Travis Bogard, the executive director for product management at Aliph.
