iPhone 4 no longer recommended by Consumer Reports

By: (more) | Mobile Devices News | Posted: Jul 12, 2010 8:40 pm

Consumer Reports has dealt the iPhone 4 another PR blow by withdrawing their recommendation for the device. Despite earlier stating during lab testing that "there's no reason, at least yet, to forgo buying an iPhone 4 over its reception concerns," further testing has given them reason to think otherwise.

While testing the iPhone 4 in a radio frequency (RF) chamber, Consumer Reports' testers were able to replicate the "you're holding it wrong" signal degradation that buyers everywhere have been griping about. Due to how easy it is to kill your signal with the phone, Mike Gikas on the Consumer Reports Blog states that "we can't recommend the iPhone 4."

Gikas did state that a fix, although ugly, has been found. A piece of tape put between the WiFi/Blueooth antenna and cellular antenna seems to fix the problem; but do you really want to be sporting a taped up phone? Gikas doesn't. His conclusion states, "Apple needs to come up with a permanent-and free-fix for the antenna problem before we can recommend the iPhone 4."
