Sharp BDXL discs in 100GB and 128GB surface in Japan
Not too long ago the specifications for BDXL were finalized allowing makers to get on with producing Blu-ray discs with much higher capacity. Sharp is the first to offer BDXL media, at least in Japan.
The new media will be offered in 100GB three layer and 128GB 4-layer versions and will only work in the Sharp BD/HDW700 Blu-ray player and recorder. 128GB BDXL-R and BDXL-RE formats will be offered with the 100GB disc only getting rewritable versions.
The media will launch in Japan on July 30 at about 5000 Yen per disc. There is no word on when the media and compatible burners will surface in other parts of the world.
