Update: Timothy Sanders, the person in the Mad Onion Forums who originally exposed OCZ, wanted me to update my post with a little declaimer. Timothy's expose post was or is not affiliated with Mad Onion or the Mad Onion Forums in anyway, nor do Mad Onion support the information posted.
I always knew there was dodgey business going on at OCZ for quite sometime now. However, until now, they were always clever enough to cover their tracks, as any good criminal can. First with the sager of http://www.athlonoc.com and OCZ owning this hardware review site (a source said OCZ brought the domain for $3500 US from the owner), the misunderstandings between what the differences were from OCZ, OCZ Technology and The Overclockerz Store, and getting friendly with websites like ours and throwing out review samples like they were going out of fashion - This basically said - I'll continue giving you hundreds of dollars worth of free hardware if you give me a good review, and I'll even throw you some advertising dollars as well.
The Corporate Overview page on the OCZ website suggests they are based in a massive multi story building, but in actual fact they are based in Indiana in a small building (pictured above) which looks more like an old computer store, not a million dollar building like we are lead to believe by the picture on the OCZ website. They were good enough to hide all the lies from us for quite some time, that was until a member of the Madonion forums exposed them, uncovering the real OCZ and how they managed to pull the covers over our eyes. This person managed to locate the real OCZ building and take a bunch of photos uncovering the real OCZ business. Below is a picture of OCZ's Main Development Product Center, impressive ain't it...
Regulars of TweakTown may remember when we started our own online store selling hardware about 6 months ago. Well, when we were looking into being an official reseller of OCZ memory in Australia, in a phone call with Ryan Peterson (OCZ Marketing Manager) he offered to send me memory with a $0 customs value, to... I guess... spice up the proposal a little. Meaning, import tax would be exempt, which would have put both of us in jail if discovered, considering the quantity of memory we were talking about importing into Australia. For the record, I declined this offer. :)
A former employer at OCZ told us about the real number of employees at OCZ, "at most times if you were to walk in you'll find no more than usually 7 ppl there at a time HONESTLY", the former employer said. That same person told us he was fired before much longer after expressing concerns to management and owners about the integrity of the business. He also had this to say:
The pics and captions related to the pics I can verify as being 100% true. OCZ is based out of a very small place in a mini mall in a small town in Indiana. It is located directly behind a White Hen pantry. I'll take things a tiny bit further. Athlonoc.com and Forumoc.com are both owned by OCZ and operated by either employees of them or people who fit quite nicely in their pocket. I know this because I am the founder of AOC. I have NOT contributed articles there in nearly a year. For some reason My name frequently gets tied into OCZ related garbage. The writer who wrote 100% of those pro OCZ articles posted on AOC was named Mickey Sethi who if you were to go into OCZ's little office space you will find him working there on a daily basis. I have no ties with any of them. I have been working hard on contributing useful content right here at mods4me.comAlong with OCZ's Quicksilver thermal paste which a former employer says was just Arctic Silver or better still, cheap thermal paste with die in it to make it appear like the OCZ Quicksilver. Then we move on to OCZ memory which they claim to have their own major memory manufacturing facility on their website, but as all uncovered by the same person on the Madonion forums, is just pictures from a different memory manufacture's facilities. I always knew the "hand picked chips" was no more than a dishonest marketing ploy.
In closing, I don't understand how a group of people running this "business" can live themselves continually lying to everyone about their business and their products, and also illegal activity as I mentioned with the customs declaration and misleading consumers. I don't suspect OCZ will be around for much longer, but at the same time I don't think it will be the last we see of them, either. Keep your ears and eyes open people, it wouldn't surprise me if the same group of people were to start a bunch of new companies with this same dishonest business practises.
Doesn't the truth suck. I know people from OCZ are reading, everything catches up with you in the end. You got lucky convincing the market you had some worthy products, you sold quite a few products, now you are red in the face from your exposed business practises. If anyone wants to discuss this further, please visit this forum thread I started in our forums.
