AMD Radeon 6850 and 6870 preview

By: (more) | Video Cards News | Posted: Oct 19, 2010 4:53 am

Ready for some GPU pole dancing?? LegitReviews have a preview of the very-close-to release (3 days!) AMD Radeon 6850 and 6870.

They have some close ups of the 6800 range as well as a sneak peak at the upcoming demo AMD created called "Mecha Rampage".

The above pic is of the Radeon HD6850 - it will include 1GB of GDDR5 memory. As you can see from the pics, the older style cooler is now gone with a sleeker, caved in fan looking design - it is also smaller which should help to fit in more cases, or SFF systems.

Front and back shots, we can see more of the fan and single Crossfire connection (no tri-Fire here lads!)

We can also see it has a single 6 pin power connector, so it is a 150W part (75W from the board, 75W from 6 pin PCI-e).

From the next image, we can see the outputs the card has - 2 x mini-DisplayPort 1.2 connections - doubling the bandwidth from the usual DisplayPort 1.1 connections, along with 1.2 it brings support for higher resolutions and stereoscopic 3D. The 6800 series is rumoured to supports up to six DisplayPort outputs by "daisy-chaining" them to two DisplayPort outputs. Also, the 6800 series comes with a full sized HDMI 1.4a output (Blu-Ray 3D support) and a dual and single link DVI-I outputs are the final two.

Now, onto the bigger brother - AMD Radeon 6870 - here she is in all her glory:

Back shot of the 6870:

Now, power connectors - we have dual 6 pin connectors - so, 75W from the board, and 150W maximum from the PSU:

As far as the rest of the pics - they're virtually similar to the 6850, so it saves you scrolling through pics.

Now onto the feature - Mecha Rampage demo.

As for checking it out in action, there's also a video for your visual pleasure:
