eSTI2 project looks to develop blood testing chip for mobile devices

By: (more) | Mobile Devices News | Posted: Nov 10, 2010 4:36 am

The mobile industry is making its way into a ton of fields and one area that it is becoming more and more influential is the medical field. From tablet implementation in hospitals to scheduling appointments online, mobile tech is looking to explode in the field. One of the biggest ideas getting a huge financial bump today is the eSTI2 project, which has received a four million GBP grant from the UK's Medical Research Coucil to develop a chip that could make blood testing for things like blood sugar, STIs and STDs something you can handle from home.

The goal is pretty awesome: skip the trip to the doctors office and get results that can take labs days to even weeks in around 15 minutes from your mobile device. Recent advances in miniaturization would allow a thumbdrive sized chip to take a sample of blood, saliva, or urine and pass the information on to the mobile device for processing. The prototypes only cost around 30 dollars to make currently but the developers are hoping to drive the cost below five dollars to make them easy to get in the hands of developing countries and the poorer segment.
