GSLO seeks Apple MFi license for Peel 520

By: (more) | Mobile Devices News | Posted: Dec 3, 2010 5:04 pm

If you are an iPod touch owner that has wished you could somehow make voice calls and send text messages when away from a WiFi network, the Apple Peel 520 may be the device that answers your wishes. The company behind the product in the US has announced that it has applied to Apple to be part of the MFi program that allows companies to build products for Apple devices that are certified.

Once the company gets into the MFi program, they can use the logos for the Apple Made for iPod/iPhone/iPad on their devices to let owners know they are compatible and certified by Apple. The Peel 520 fits onto the iPod touch like a case and adds 3G connectivity. The question in my mind is will Apple want a device like this on the market at all.

If you can buy a cheap iPod touch and basically turn the thing into an iPhone, many might just opt for the iPod touch and not buy the iPhone. The iPhone is a huge part of the worth of Apple right now and I can't see them doing anything that would jeopardize sales of the iPhone. I may be wrong, but I will be surprised if the Peel 520 gets approval.
