Micron unveils ClearNAND - embedded error correction in flash memory chips

By: (more) | Storage News | Posted: Dec 6, 2010 1:00 am

Solid State drives are great - I use one in each of my systems personally, but most people know of their downfalls - bits fail, pages fill up and cells deteriorate over time.

On current SSD's the controller does the heavy lifting to make sure your drive is looked after, where brand names like SandForce can inspire confidence in drives sporting the logo.

Micron wants to change this with their new ClearNAND chips. The technology involves every ClearNAND memory module sporting a built-in 24-bit error correction engine which means the drives controller no longer needs to do all that heavy lifting and can focus on the good stuff such as delivering your data at super speeds.
