Rovio looking to get into the app billing game

By: (more) | Mobile Devices News | Posted: Dec 10, 2010 10:34 pm

Rovio Mobile, who has scored worldwide recognition for the hit game Angry Birds, is branching away from the gaming world and introducing their own mobile payment software. This software would give telecoms the ability to offer app payments on their mobile device bill instead or directly to companies like Apple or Google.

Rovio, based in Finland, will roll the software out in early 2011 by teaming up with the top Finnish mobile carrier Elisa. Allowing mobile carriers to offer paying for apps on their cell phone bills instead of making direct payments to the companies gives mobile carriers a piece of the piece instead of none. Mobile apps were a $4.1 billion business last year, so the carriers will definitely want a piece of that action.
