Navy builds prototype Rail Gun - wants to play Quake 3 for real

By: (more) | Gaming News | Posted: Dec 13, 2010 1:30 am

Whoever is behind this is a huge fan of Quake 3 or the Arnold Schwarzenegger movie, Eraser. The Navy has been doing some serious upgrades to it's hardware, 3 years ago they were pushing 8 megajoule blasts and now, that number has improved somewhat to 33 megajoules accelerating them using magnets (as you do).

With this power, it can push at speeds of up to Mach 7 for the slug and a current range of 100 miles - with the hope of doubling that by the time these Rail Guns get mounted on decks of battleships by 2025. By that time they won't have such a large power draw and the dangers of exploding shells.
