Seagate offers green HDD with industry's highest performance

By: (more) | Storage News | Posted: Dec 14, 2010 4:22 pm

When it comes to storage, Seagate is one of the biggest names in the storage industry with its line of offerings for computers and enterprise use. Seagate is big on green storage and has unveiled a new line of HDDs that it claims have the industry's highest performance while sipping power. The new line is called the Barracuda Green hard drive.

The drives spin at 5900 rpm, which is the fastest in the industry for green drives. The drives are also the first to use 4K sectors in the desktop segment. In addition to sipping power, the drives are also made with green practices. The drives can be 70% of more recycled and use low halogen compounds. The new line of drives is offered in 2TB, 1.5TB and 1TB with all shipping right now. The line was formerly known as the Barracuda LP series.

"Not only do Barracuda Green drives offer environmental improvements in power consumption and material usage, but these drives are also among the first hard drives from Seagate to offer SmartAlign technology," said Dave Mosley, Seagate executive vice president of Sales, Marketing and Product Line Management. "This is important because the industry is transitioning to 4K sector formatting called Advanced Format to improve capacities and maintain strong error correction. However, the transition to Advanced Format without SmartAlign technology can be complex and require additional integration steps and software utilities to avoid performance degradation. SmartAlign technology removes these concerns and makes this transition virtually invisible for our customers."
