Newest Kinect usage: Star Wars style holograms?

By: (more) | Peripherals News | Posted: Jan 26, 2011 7:00 am

It's not news that the Kinect has gotten the attention of modders; from guys stuck in basements with a soldering iron and a dream to students at the biggest universities it seems everyone has their own new Kinect mod. The Object-Based Media Group at the MIT Media Lab have their own dream for the Kinect: Star Wars-esque hologram sending, R2-D2 style.

The holograms are based around the Kinect and a few other easy to find hardware pieces, which is a big jump from a similar transmitter that was shown last year that required 16 cameras and ran at a terrible FPS. These Kinect holograms, which are captured and streamed over a PC internet connection, can hit 15 frames per second, with the MIT guys thinking they'll eventually hit 30 FPS. Next stop, a Death Star orbiting our planet.
