Skype 5.0 for Mac loses the beta label and goes official

By: (more) | Software News | Posted: Jan 28, 2011 4:32 am

It's now time to remove the beta tag from Skype for Mac. Now able to match it's PC counterpart, Skype for Mac version 5.0 has a few new features in its first official release, as well as a catch.

First, the catch. Group video calling is no longer free; you'll have to pony up either $4.99 per day or take on a monthly subscription for $8.99 a month after a one week free period. Other than that, Skype 5.0 is free to download and use for voice chat, instant messaging, and video messaging with a single user. A couple new features have also been added, including a tighter user interface that erases some of the wasted white space as well as the ability to hide Skype until you receive a call.
