NVIDIA Tegra roadmap includes Superman, Batman, Wolverine and Iron Man

By: (more) | Mobile Devices News | Posted: Feb 16, 2011 1:16 am

NVIDIA is really pushing their Tegra line and for a good reason - it quite simply kicks arse. NVIDIA's currently sampling a quad-core Tegra chip that is going by an internal name of Kal-El (otherwise known as The Son of Krypton, aka, Superman).

Kal-El will most likely turn into NVIDIA's Tegra 3 once it hits the market, but is capable of quite a bit of muscle. It was shown off by NVIDIA running a 2560 x 1440 stream that was being decoded on a developmental device, scaled down to the slate's native resolution of 1366 x 768 and also displayed on a 30-inch display pushing 2560 x 1600 - the workload was being handled in real time, all by Kal-El.

Going by NVIDIA's own estimations, Kal-El is capable of providing double the processing power of Tegra 2 whilst also giving a 300-percent jump in graphics capability. In a second demonstration by NVIDIA, Kal-El was running a demo of Great Battles Medieval which was running at 720p with 650 enemy soldiers being rendered - quite the task for a mobile chip!

This is all made possible by Kal-El's 12 GPU cores, NVIDIA are claiming that it's much more efficient in battery life given the CPU and GPU power included by saying it should provide up to 12 hours of HD playback under the right circumstances.
