AMD is not committing to its entry in the DDR3 memory market

By: (more) | RAM News | Posted: Aug 12, 2011 10:08 am

Despite this news heavily circulating the web recently, it turns out that apparently AMD has no definitive plans to dabble long term in the DDR3 memory market. This comes as quite the surprise, though, given AMD even had a dedicated page on their own site indicating three new Radeon branded memory series in the lineup that looked to be aimed directly at the consumer market.

As it so turns out, the AMD Radeon branded modules spotted in random stores in Japan and even reports of some having been seen in Canada, were supposedly entered into the retail market in minimal quantity to ascertain whether or not it was a viable venture for AMD to distribute the series' through channel partners in the future.

AMD Spokesman Dave Erskine said in a statement yesterday :-

AMD does not manufacture memory and does not plan to sell system memory directly to our customers.AMD is currently determining if the sale of AMD Radeon-branded memory through channel partners is a viable opportunity and as such it has appeared in some regions for purchase through retail.

In other words, based on the immaturity of density, speed and general character of these modules versus the likes of what many of the DDR3 market players like Corsair and G.Skill are offering, it's doubtful AMD will make much of a splash here before pulling the plug.
