Scientists at the University of California Santa Barbara are a step closer to creating a quantum chip and making it something useful. They think they have figured out a complex part of the design - where the researchers have worked out a way to keep qubits in a useful, stable state. While the results were good, the quCPU needs to be by absolute zero which means it'll be some time before the world sees full quantum computing.

Rick Bergman, formerly at AMD following the ATI buy, has gone on to pastures new. Now he's gone on to become CEO of Synaptics. Synaptics works with interfaces in mobile computing and communications. Bergman's track record at AMD is, according to the Synaptics board, why he's a good fit.

There has been tons going on over at HP. Since Whitman joined, Apotheker's 11-month reign has been brought into question further. On the hardware front, HP claims it will fast track its decision on the confused PC business. Perhaps the Personal Systems Group will be a spin-off, but there are murmurs from HP and other sources that there's hardware to come. Ann Livermore says there will be another tablet from the company. With webOS out of the window, there's speculation it will be a Windows 8 device. Meanwhile, HP is tipped to have an Ultrabook device coming along sooner rather than later. In an apparent u-turn, Apotheker's shock efforts to turn it into SAP, it seems his vision for HP could become naught.

Our editor in chief, Mike Magee, caught a flight to the White Bull conference in Spain. There, he heard about a ton of start-ups list their pitches, among them Birthday Slam which plans to cut birthday suicides. Meanwhile, venture capitalists have outlined ways to get ahead with funding in Europe and that the scene is far from dead. Honest. Qualcomm, ZAG and SAP all pitched in. Google also had its say. You can still make money, really, they promise.

Taiwan's HTC was hit this week by claims of a severe vulnerability within its ranks. It took a while, but HTC finally admitted the catastrophe and said it's working on a fix. The problem is, the statement didn't tell us when. Critics suggest the problem is with HTC's insistence on logging all your data anyway.

A special mention goes to Apple's iPhone launch yesterday. It wasn't an iPhone 5. It was a fixed iPhone 4. The crowd went wild. But we think it's a lemon.

Finally, here's a bible reading. Ye Booke of Ah-Em-De - And the LORD did cause the board of Ah-Em-De to row. That's all for now - read this and more at TechEYE.
