WD has suspended its HDD production in Thailand due to floods

By: (more) | Storage News | Posted: Oct 12, 2011 12:28 pm

The massive flooding going on in Thailand at the moment has not only affected millions upon millions of people over a wide spread region, but it's also of course affecting many businesses operating there, including Western Digital.

The company has just issued out a press release indicating the severity of the situation, having been forced to suspend its hard drive production at that location to protect not only their employees, but also equipment from being destroyed by the uncontrollable amounts of water.

As a result, it unfortunately means that there will be serious constraints in WD's overall supply, as the company heavily depends on its Thailand facilities for its inner workings. In the quarter ending July 1st the Thailand fab had shipped just over 32 million HDDs which equates to about 60% of WD's total manufacturing output.

With the always changing conditions in Thailand at the moment WD has said that they can't yet make a full assessment as to the impact this has long term. No doubt we'll get an update on the situation again soon; hopefully a more positive one.
